Growth Mindsets- developing resilience...

Date: 10th Mar 2016 @ 9:54pm

I hope everyone has had a good break over the half term.

Over the next few weeks we will be working on our 8 personal goals from the International Primary Curriculum and will be uing these as the themes for our assemblies. For the first two weeks we will be encouraging the children to develop resilience and not give up when they face something that may be tricky or difficult. We will also be talking to the children about having a Growth Mindset. This will involve the children learning to think in a positve way and change some of the ways that they see new things which may be challenging both in their learning and in their lives.

We will be talking to the children about what a 'fixed mindset ' is and how this differes from a 'growth mindset'.

Developing a Growth Mindset means:

Instead of.......                                                              Try thinking......

I'm not good at this                                                        What am I missing?

I give up                                                                        I'll use a different strategy

It's good enough                                                             Is this really my best work?

I can't make this any better                                             I can always improve

This is too hard                                                              This may take me some time and require more effort

I made a mistake                                                            Mistakes help me learn

I just can't do this                                                            I'm going to train my brain

I'll never be as smart as that                                            I will learn how to do this

Plan A didn't work                                                           There's always plan B

My friend can do it                                                         I will learn from them

Most of all we want everyone to develop and attitude of not saying I can't do it but saying I can't do it YET!!!

Below is a useful link from an educationalist who has carried out a lot of work on Growth Mindsets, please have a look !

I would be interested to know what you think.
