Progression in Writing
Progression is mapped out in these areas:
- Text type outcomes
- Grammar, punctuation, sentence structures
- Stimulus texts used
Progression in Text type outcomes:
Our fiction outcome units have each been allocated one of three main fiction focusses:
Across each year, the fiction units will focus on and develop on these elements. They are returned to more than once in the year, and again in following years. Fiction outcomes for each unit have been chosen to support the fiction focus at each Key Stage progression point.
Our non-fiction outcome units have been allocated across each Key Stage.
The outcomes include:
- Non-chronological report
- Balanced argument
There is repetition in the non-fiction outcomes across the Key Stages. Non-fiction outcomes for each unit have been chosen to support the skills developed at each Key Stage progression point.
Our poetry outcome units have been allocated based on poetry types that support the writing outcomes in each Key Stage. Within each poetry unit, there will be a focus on language and form.
Sentence Structure Progression
Alongside our writing outcomes, there is a focus on sentence structure progression. The National Curriculum outcomes guide this progression, we use Alan Peat sentence structures to support the teaching of these.
